2018 NZAMD Dance Exams

27/8/2018

Over the 25th and 26th of August, our students sat their New Zealand Association of Modern Dance (NZAMD) Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary Dance Exams that they have been working extremely hard towards through out the year.

Not only did every student pass their exam but 89% of our students gained top three marks of either Honors, High Honors or Distinction! These are truly outstanding results.

A special congratulations to Kate Kawahara who received an NZAMD Scholarship Awards Nomination for Contemporary. She will be heading down to Wellington in October to compete for the national title! The NZAMD Scholarship Awards weekend is held annually and gives nominated senior students in each discipline the opportunity to take classes with top International and New Zealand tutors / adjudicators.

We are so proud of everyone's efforts not just on the day but all through out the year. Thank you to our examiner Deborah Roberts, our teachers, parents and of course our dancers for making these exams possible.

Now it's time to start getting prepared for the end of year concert!

In The Studio With...Maddy

23/6/2018

Picture
Maddy has been a critical part of the L'Ecole de Danse team for nearly three years now. Besides being an incredibly talented dancer and choreographer, our students love her for her kind and caring nature and bubbly personality. We sat down with her in our studio to ask her a few questions...
1. When and where did you learn to dance?
I started dancing at age 3, in a small town called Mackay, along the East coast of Australia.

2. What made you first realise you wanted to pursue a career as a dancer and dance teacher?
I first realised I wanted to pursue a creative career in my early teens. I went full time as a dance student at 14 and did all my school by correspondence, I regularly saw my older girls that Iidealised go to auditions and accept jobs overseas. I think that's what made me want to pursue dance, travelling to new places and having a common love for this art. Also I love bringing joy to the people that get to watch you perform, its such a great feeling to see and hear their reactions to what you've created. I decided to pursue a teaching career a few years ago, I've always loved working with children and students, to see their faces light up when they have finally nailed a step they've been practicing for weeks is so rewarding. I like to think I can make a positive impact to these kids lives and be there as another role model for them if they ever need guidance.

3. What is your favourite style of dance and why?
I started at 3 years old learning ballet, it wasn't until I was closer to a teenager that I found a love for this style. I absolutely loved the graceful, fluidity of every step, as well as the strong lines and the discipline you have to have to accomplish each difficult movement with a sense of ease. As I continued along this path I started to dip into other styles and find anincredible love for contemporary dance. I love the different type of movement, the floor work, the continued movement pathways, what you can create is honestly endless.

4. What are your must have items in your dance bag?

Ballet Skirt and shoes, Mini first aid kit with LOTS of band strong aids, hair pins, ear phones, note book and pens.

5. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not busy dancing?
I like to relax in some way, either going for walks, hanging out with friends, I love finding new places to visit and see.

6. What do you love about teaching L'Ecole de Danse dancers?

I love the dedication they have towards each class. I also love that they know when they need to knuckle down in class and ask questions as well as having fun. I love hearing the stories about what the did at school and what they have coming up as well as their accomplishments outside of LDD.

7. If you could go back in time, what advice and lessons learned would you had given your “younger self”?
I feel like this is the toughest question, umm.... probably, Don't be so hard on yourself. I feel like this industry can sometimes be quite negative, so its important to be in a positive learning atmosphere with people you trust. Do what makes you happy as life is way too short for anyone to be unhappy. Know its never ok to continuously compare yourself to others. Working hard pays off, never underestimate the power of practicing. and probably the biggest one, don't question yourself if what you're doing is right when you haven't even started.

The Benefits of Dance

6/1/2018

Dancing can often be thought of as simply just an after school activity and all too often overlooked for all the other physical, emotional, social and educational benefits for children. Going into the New Year, I thought it was important to highlight some of the many amazing benefits your child is getting through their classes at L'Ecole de Danse.

Picture
Physical Benefits

The most obvious benefit of dance is physical. Dance significantly improves aerobic fitness, cardiovascular health, muscular strength, flexibility and range of motion which is vital in a child's growth and development. All forms of dance whether it be ballet or hiphop boosts coordination and balance. Our teachers at L'Ecole de Danse ensure that children are constantly moving during their class in order to improve endurance and stamina. We also run stretching and conditioning classes for students who want to boost their flexiblity and strength outside of dance classes. Rest assured, when your child leaves one of our classes, they would have got their sweat on!
Picture
Emotional Benefits

A crutial benefit is the ability for dance to improve children's emotional and mental health. Everyday classes, exams and concerts all instil a sense of pride, accomplishment and achievement which can increase overall self-esteem. There is nothing more rewarding to our teachers than seeing the pride on the kids faces when they master a challenging movement or combination. Those smiles as the students run off stage at our end of year concert or receive their results from their exams can't be beaten either.
Picture
Social Benefits

Another important benefit of dance are the social benefits. As our students regularly attend classes, important social skills such as teamwork, communication, trust and cooperation are developed. The teachers at L'Ecole de Danse ensure that these skills are being developed through dancing/performing as a group, activities which involve group work and peer-review exercises. We believe that many friendships have been formed in our over the last 10 years!
Picture
Educational Benefits

The last benefit of dance I want to discuss are the educational benefits. Dance can offer certain cognitive and educational benefits as students are exposed to movement, music and performance. Attention, memory and learning are all developed through learning certain movements, exercises and full routines.

Performance at Auckland Art Gallery

7/5/2017

Our senior dancers were fortunate enough to be invited to perform at Auckland Art Gallery on Sunday the 7th of May as part of NZ Dance Week 2017. It was the first chance for our Contemporary and Lyrical troupe to perform their competition pieces along side our Intermediate Ballet dancers and Hip-hop duo. We were only one of five dance schools in Auckland to be chosen to perform and were very grateful for the opportunity.

Thank you so much to our dancers who performed and a big thank you to all the friends and family who supported us as well.

What a special performance in a beautiful space!
